L'étude du développement de la littérature africaine ouvre la porte à une série de réflexions sur le devenir du continent et de sa population.

Se connaître soi-même, être conscient de son identité culturelle, sont deux facteurs indissociables dans le processus d'affirmation de sa propre personnalité. Partager ces valeurs avec les autres parties du globe est essentiel pour les peuples africains dont la culture et la civilisation ont été, des siècles durant, déniés ou mis au ban de la société.

Ce livre est une modeste contribution à une meilleure connaissance de l'histoire africaine, à travers les chefs d'œuvre de la littérature orale et écrite de ce continent, longtemps marginalisé, mais qui, contre vents et marais, a réussi à survivre et à remonter à la surface. Il fait référence au prestigieux empire du Mali, magistralement raconté par les griots depuis le 13ème siècle jusqu'à l'époque actuelle, à Sunjata Kéita, le héros légendaire et empereur du Mandé dont les exploits sont une leçon de vie, la Charte de Kurukanfuga, qui historiquement est la première charte au monde sur les droits humains.

La littérature africaine est très diversifiée, bien qu'elle montre des similtudes. Parmi toutes les simitudes, le dénominateur commun des cultures du continent africain est indubitablement la tradition orale. L'écriture en Afrique noire a commencé au Moyen-Age avec l'introduction de la langue arabe et plus tard, au 19ème siècle, de l'alphabet latin. C'est à partir de 1934, avec la naissance du courant littéraire de la Negritude, que les auteurs africains ont commenc à écrire en français ou en anglais. Les années 1960 ont marqué de profonds changements, aussi bien quantitatifs que qualitatifs au niveau de la publication dans les pays francophones et anglophones.

Le présent ouvrage donne une vue d'ensemble sur l'origine et le rôle de griots dans la société et la riche culture africaine, les différentes composantes de la tradition orale, et les tendances majeures dans le développement de la littérature africaine. L'étude du mouvement littéraire et philosophique de la Negritude englobe le contexte historique, la définition du concept et les principaux auteurs, les contradictions idéologiques, l'aile gauche de la Negritude, et la " Théorie de la Personnalité Africaine" dans les pays anglophones. Le monographie fournit aussi les tendances courantes dans la littérature africaine après 1960 et la réception d'un pannel d'auteurs africains.

L'auteur est titulaire d'un doctorat en sciences sociales de la Faculté des Sciences de l'Education de l'université Humboldt de Berlin. Elle a enseigné durant plusieurs années l'histoire de la littérature africaine et de la littérature allemande successivement à l'Ecole Normale Supérieure de Bamako et à la Faculté des Lettres, Langues, Arts et Sciences Humaines de l'Université de Bamako. D'octobre 2008 à mars 2009, elle a participé au Programme Fulbright de Visite académique à l'Université d'Indiana à Bloomington.

The study of the development of African literature leads to various reflections on the future of the continent and its population.

Self-knowledge and consciousness of one's cultural identity are two major factors in the process of affirmation of one's personality. To share these values with the other continents of the globe is essential for the Africans whose culture and civilization have been denied or rejected during many centuries.

Through masterpieces of the oral and the written literature, this book makes a modest contribution to a better knowledge of the history of the African continent that has been marginalized for a long time, but has succeeded in surviving and moving forward. The book relates the story of prestigious empire of Mande, which has been marvelously told since the thirteenth century by griots and popular singers, Sunjata Kéita, the legendary hero and emperor of Mande whose life is a lesson, and the Charter of Kurukanfuga, historically the first charter in the world on human rights.

African literature is highly diversified, even though it shows some similarities. In fact, the common denominator of the cultures of the African continent is undoubtedly the oral tradition. Writing on black Africa started in the middle Ages with the introduction of the Arabic language and later, in the nineteenth century with introduction of the Latin alphabet. Since 1934, with the birth of the "Negritude," African authors began to write in French or in English. Since the 1960's quantitative and qualitative changes could be observed in the field of publication in both Francophone and Anglophone states.

The main objective of the present work is to give an overview of the origin and the role of griots in the African society, the different components of the oral tradition, and the major trends in the development of African literature. The study of the Negritude movement encompasses the historical context, the definition of the concept and its principal authors, ideological contradictions, the left wing of the Negritude, and the "Theory of the African Personality" in Anglophone countries. The monograph provides as well current trends in the African literature after 1960 and the response of a panel of African authors.

The author holds a PhD in social studies from the Humboldt University of Berlin in Germany. She taught, successively for many years, the history of African literature and German literature at the Ecole Normale Suprieure and the Faculty of Literatures, Languages, Arts and Social Sciences of the University of Bamako. From October 2008 to March 2009, she participated in the Fulbright Visiting Scholar program at Indiana University-Bloomington.
